Based on historical facts and archaeological excavations, Georgia is recognized as an ancient hearth of winemaking. Moreover, Georgia deservedly acquired the status of a “Cradle of wine“, where a man first domesticated wild vines and carefully passed from generation to generation 8,000 years of winemaking culture. At a permanent exhibition in London, the Georgian corner in the wine city “Vinopolis” was called “Georgia – the cradle of wine.”
The discovered artifacts (VI millennium BC – Ancient grape pips – Vitis Vinifera Sativa) proofed a sacred connection between wine and the Georgian people.
Georgia counts 8 main wine regions: Kakheti, Kartli, Imereti, Racha-Lechkhumi, Abkhazia, Adjara, Guria and Samegrelo, there you can meet about 500 unique and endemic grape varieties. Kakheti is famous for the grape varieties Saperavi, Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane; Kartli – with Goruli Mtsvane; Imereti – with Tsitska, Tsolikouri and Krakhuna; Guria and Adjara – with Chkhaveri; Samegrelo – with Ojaleshi, Racha-Lechkhumi – with Usakhelouri, Aleksandrouli and Mudjuretuli.
